Oolite 2.0 The future of Oolite the space sim game

Those who remember Elite would have dreamt of the game expanding with endless possibilities. As we see with all modern space sim games they all have originated from a single gene pool of Elite. Oolite however is directly based on Elite with great expansion program, ongoing development and above all a vision that sees past the game and to how it can create a following that’s existed more than 25 years.

Oolite 2.0 the name for future of the Oolite has had many names, MNSR, EMMSTRAN which marks a plato in development and feature program for the current incarnation of the game. Oolite 2.0 is cleared stated as being a ‘significant update’ and not ‘The Sequel’ and hasn’t steered aware from the Elite formula. Aegidian at this point are nurturing ideas and at an early stage of development.

Oolite 2.0 will see the removing of it’s backward compatibility features and will render all existing OXPs unusable. Third party developers will have to take make updates to their OXPs as I am sure they will be preparing for this already. Existing saved games will cater for 1.x versions  but version 2 saved games won’t load.

The Oolite 2.0 upgrade will have improved graphic engine and will be based on Griff’s Ships, the audio is to use OpenAL Gameplay changes will see the end of the energy bomb but see new NPS shields. The end is nigh for some Mac uses as the support for Mac OS X 10.3 and the IRIX port will end  and will require OpenGL 2.0 on the more powerful Intel Mac with Mac OS X 10.6 but be at the low-end Core 2 Duos.

The future of Oolite 2.0 requires its developers and community and those who play the game really appreciate the effort that goes into make Oolite what it is. Great efforts are to be made in making OXP development as easy as possible, improving the interface, add more automation with some code needing major and minor re-writes. Aegidian is expecting controversy over the changes and would appreciate your feedback.
